Book Review of Nobody’s Fool (Detective Sami Kierce #2)

Nobody’s Fool (Detective Sami Kierce #2): A Thrilling Ride with Harlan Coben

When I first picked up Nobody’s Fool, the latest from Harlan Coben, I felt a rush of nostalgia mixed with trepidation. Coben has a knack for spinning intricate plots, and as a fan of his work, I found myself intrigued by the return of Detective Sami Kierce—a character whose misfortunes seemed to rival those of an unlucky protagonist in a Greek tragedy. I’d first met Sami in Fool Me Once, and while I had mixed feelings about that outing, I was eager to see how Coben would further complicate his life in this follow-up.

From the very first page, it’s clear that Coben is back with a vengeance. Nobody’s Fool is an electrifying thriller that expertly weaves humor and heart-pounding suspense. The story centers around Sami, a man who’s quite possibly the unluckiest person ever to put on a badge—or in this case, fancy hearing aids while hunting down justice. After losing his fiancée to a brutal crime and stumbling across a tangled web of secrets from his past, Sami is forced to confront demons both old and new.

Coben introduces a delightful ensemble cast that plays off Sami’s charm and determination. The Pink Panthers, reminiscent of the Golden Girls but with a penchant for detective work, had me chuckling as they brought a refreshing energy to the storyline. There’s the quick-witted Debbie, whose one-liners had me laughing out loud, and Leisure Suit Lenny, whose mysterious gadgets felt like they belonged in a spy thriller. If Netflix picks this up (fingers crossed!), I can easily see these characters stealing the show.

The pacing of the narrative is impeccable—Coben masterfully cranks up the tension, leading to jaw-dropping revelations that kept me glued to the page. The heart-stopping twists—especially the final two—left my mind racing and my heart pounding. I won’t spoil anything, but trust me when I say that the revelations are so impactful that I found myself whispering “What? Really?” long after I’d turned the last page.

There were moments when I felt some plot elements were predictable, particularly surrounding Sami’s tangled past. The abrupt reveal of the perpetrator surprised me, yet I wished for a more thorough explanation as to how everything connected—something for which Coben is usually so adept. Still, these minor quibbles didn’t overshadow my enjoyment of the narrative, which I devoured in just a couple of sittings.

In conclusion, if you’re a fan of atmospheric thrillers packed with humor, layered characters, and twisty plots, Nobody’s Fool is a must-read. It’s not just a book for fans of Coben but for anyone looking for a story that tackles themes of redemption, guilt, and the quest for truth. Personally, my reading experience was both thrilling and reflective, making me momentarily wish I could join this delightful cadre of amateur sleuths chasing the truth.

So, if you’re in the mood for some pulse-pounding action mixed with unforgettable character moments, cancel your appointments and grab a copy of Nobody’s Fool. I promise you won’t regret it! Thanks to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for allowing me to dive into this unputdownable mystery. Happy reading!
