A Dive into the Chaos: Review of Classroom of the Elite: Year 2 (Light Novel) Vol. 4 by Syougo Kinugasa

As a long-time fan of Classroom of the Elite, I was both excited and curious to see where Syougo Kinugasa would take us in Volume 4 of Year 2. There’s something uniquely exhilarating about a story that revolves around manipulation, rivalry, and the constant shifting of alliances, and this series has a way of capturing that beautifully. But, if I’m honest, this volume left me with mixed feelings—much like Ayanokoji himself, caught between complexity and simplicity.

This volume unfolds within the longest arc yet, spanning three books, which initially set high expectations. The iconic mental battles and underlying strategies that define Classroom of the Elite are all present, but, dare I say, the execution felt a tad lackluster at times. While there were exhilarating bits of action—like the hilarious attempts of the third-year students to take down Kouenji—I missed some of the signature charm and clever wit that had me hooked in previous volumes. As I turned the pages, I couldn’t help but feel that the relentless action overshadowed the intricate tactics that make this series so special.

Kinugasa’s writing shines when he delves into character dynamics. The chemistry between Ibuki and Ayanokoji was a delightful surprise; their interactions brought a lighter, comedic flair that was refreshing amidst the weight of competition and rivalry. The quote, “I didn’t think that being cute meant the same as being trustworthy,” perfectly encapsulates the themes of deception and misdirection that persist throughout the series. It’s a clever layer that Kinugasa weaves into the narrative, reminding us that appearances can be deceiving—a central tenet of the plot.

Despite its shortcomings, there were several standout moments that made the reading worthwhile. The showdown between Gorilla—Housen—and Ryueen was a gripping encounter that left me on the edge of my seat. And then there’s Ichika. Every time she appeared, the story erupted into beautiful chaos. Her unpredictable nature injects life into the narrative, and I found myself eagerly awaiting her next chaotic move.

Yet, pacing felt uneven. Some action sequences dragged on longer than necessary, diluting their impact. And the conclusion, while interesting in its ambition, seemed somewhat anticlimactic given the buildup over three volumes. While I appreciated Kinugasa’s attempt to break from convention, I hoped for a bit more punch—especially after all the tension leading up to it. Nevertheless, it’s hard to ignore the brilliance behind Kouenji’s antics and Ayanokoji’s subtle maneuvering. "Gorillas gotta be handcuffed at all times, after all," perfectly highlights the absurdity that often underpins these characters’ lives.

Overall, I’d rate this volume a solid 7.75/10. For those who relish battles of wits peppered with comedy and convoluted friendships, you’ll find enjoyment here. However, if you’re seeking the signature tension and intrigue that marked earlier volumes, you might find yourself wishing for a bit more depth. In the end, Classroom of the Elite continues to be a fascinating exploration of intellect and ambition, and while this volume wasn’t perfect, it did continue to entertain and engage—much like the unpredictable nature of its characters. If you’re a fan or simply curious about an academic battle royale filled with absurdity and clever maneuvering, take the plunge. You might find a gem within the chaos.
