Book Review of The Situationship

The Situationship: A Whimsical Dive into Modern Romance

When I first heard about The Situationship by Abby Jimenez, I was intrigued not only by the title (because, honestly, who hasn’t found themselves in a romantic gray area?) but also by its origin as a bonus chapter in the Target exclusive edition of Just for the Summer. As a fan of Abby’s charming writing and the heartwarming worlds she creates, I couldn’t resist diving in. Plus, the thought of a pig named Kevin Bacon—a mascot, no less—had me giggling before I’d even turned a page!

At its core, The Situationship introduces us to Maddy and Doug, whose paths cross in a way that’s both adorable and a bit chaotic. Maddy is amusingly distracted by a scavenger hunt that initially seems quirky, though I can’t say it resonated with me absolutely. Doug, on the other hand, comes across as effortlessly charming—what could be more attractive than a guy walking his pig? Their lunch date spirals into an exploration of whether they’re entering an "unofficial relationship" or something significantly more complicated. It’s relatable, funny, and an honest look at modern dating norms, underscoring how easily lines become blurred in a world of situationships.

What I found particularly delightful was Abby’s knack for character development. Maddy starts off guarded, reluctant to let anyone in, while Doug exudes a warmth that makes you want to cheer for him from the first moment. Their chemistry—both sweet and humorous—carries the narrative along, and by the end, their journey feels both satisfying and authentic.

Abby’s writing style is, as always, engaging and filled with wit—a perfect balance of humor and emotional depth. The pacing felt just right; the story unfurled naturally, allowing me to savor each moment. And can we talk about the “sneak peek” at her upcoming release, Say You’ll Remember Me? The introduction of a “grumpy vet” paired with a cat lover already has me digging deep into my reserves of anticipation! Abby knows how to hook pet lovers (and she always delivers with an abundance of warmth and humor).

Speaking of humor, I found a few standout lines that made me laugh aloud—like Maddy’s thoughts on her scavenger hunt and her inner monologue about Doug and Kevin. The moments where she lets her walls down were poignant and brought a level of sincerity that I truly appreciated.

I would recommend The Situationship to anyone who has navigated the often murky waters of modern love—whether you’re currently in the throes of a "situationship" or fondly reminiscing about those playful, tentative moments of connection. It’s a delightful read that balances humor with heartfelt truths, leaving you with a smile and a series of “what ifs” to ponder.

Honestly, this short story and its sneak peek are well worth the 99 cents on Amazon. I found myself wanting to pick it up again, if only to relive Maddy and Doug’s charming escapades, as well as look forward to Abby’s next colorful offering. I can’t help but feel that April 1, 2025, will be marked in bold on my calendar—cat lovers and romance enthusiasts, prepare yourselves!
