Book Review of Mrs. Endicott’s Splendid Adventure

A Splendid Escape with Mrs. Endicott

It’s not often that a book comes along and feels like a personal invitation to adventure, but Mrs. Endicott’s Splendid Adventure by Rhys Bowen did just that for me. I’d known about Bowen as part of the Jungle Red Writers but had yet to dive into her literary offerings. Upon discovering this novel, I just knew I had to embark on this journey with Ellie Endicott. Spoiler alert: it turned out to be a delightful adventure not just for Ellie, but for me as well!

At the heart of the story is Ellie Endicott—a middle-aged, dutiful wife living in pre-WWII Surrey—and her rather shocking departure from her mundane existence. When her husband Lionel calls it quits after three decades, Ellie is faced with the harsh realities of divorce in a society where men wield all the power. Instead of resigning herself to bitterness, she opts for a more exhilarating path: a trip to the French Riviera, a place where she once found joy and escape as a young girl.

But Ellie is not alone; her journey transforms into an empowering communal experience as she invites her housekeeper Mavis—trapped in an abusive marriage—and Dora, a spirited elderly neighbor eager for one last hurrah. Together, they load up Lionel’s Bentley and embark on their adventure. As they find themselves “stuck” in the picturesque village of Saint Benet due to a car breakdown, the story unfolds beautifully, weaving in themes of friendship, resilience, and the courage to claim one’s joy against all odds.

Bowen masterfully brings each character to life. I was particularly drawn to the townsfolk, from Louis, the capable mechanic, to Henri, the bar owner with a past as a chef. The way Ellie connects with these diverse characters illustrates her growth and ability to nurture relationships—despite the looming shadows of WWII. The dialogue was sharp and engaging, creating a vivid tapestry of emotions and experiences that kept me riveted.

One aspect that stood out was Bowen’s ability to balance light-hearted moments with deeper, darker themes related to the approaching war. As the story progresses, Ellie transitions from a woman seeking solace into a formidable force against the rising tides of hate and intolerance. Her journey toward empowerment reminded me of the strength that resides in unlikely places, and I found myself cheering for her every step of the way.

Bowen’s writing style is wonderfully immersive; she has a talent for making you feel the sun-soaked streets of France and the weight of the characters’ struggles. The pacing felt just right—smooth and inviting—allowing me to savor every scene as I would a fine meal.
